Reasons for Seniors to Consider a Mobility Scooter

There are many good reasons for people, seniors in particular, to consider purchasing a mobility scooter. One of the best, and most obvious, reason is the increased accessibility.

Shopping centers and other public areas are all increasing their levels of accessibility for people with mobility scooters. In turn, it is becoming a lot easier for people on mobility scooters to use these places and their facilities. Public transport is also being revolutionized, with the majority of buses, trains, and trams all increasing their accessibility to people in mobility scooters.

Another big reason is injury prevention. When you get older and the aches and pains start to add up, you lose physical strength and just aren’t as capable as you once were. In those situations, the risk of falling and badly hurting yourself is very real. With a scooter, you can decrease those odds of injury in a big, big way.

If you are recovering from a surgery or are currently in the healing process from any condition, a mobility scooter can help you preserve your strength and can aid you in your recovery. Your life will be a lot more comfortable knowing you have your scooter and do not to suffer more pain simply because you need to get around.

Mobility scooters are very easy to assemble and to operate. Most good scooters can be assembled in a minute or less, and the instructions can be easily picked up on as they aren’t hard to use at all.

The batteries can be charged at home and it’s a very simple process. Most scooters come with instructions with charging but most of them work in the same way, and it’s incredibly straightforward. These scooters are designed for elders who may not be so technology savvy so they make them very easy to understand and to use.

Independence is a huge part of life and when you lose it, you can feel like a part of you has gone. Like you are a burden on others. Many people can fall into depression once they lose their independence. Mobility scooters help you keep that independence and keep your dignity. Your self-esteem will be high when you know that you can move around and take care of yourself and that you aren’t a burden on anyone else. Not only that, but your loved ones will have peace of mind as they know that you are okay and that you are continuing to live your life.

Types of Mobility Scooters

When you are picking a motorized scooter, it is crucial that you choose the type of scooter that fits you the best. And to do that, you must first understand the different types of scooters and their benefits.

Three-Wheeled Scooters

Three-wheeled scooters are great if you are mostly planning to use them indoors and on generally smooth surfaces. As there will likely be some narrow turns in your home, this scooter specializes in having a sharp turning radius meaning it will fit really well in even the most cramped home layouts. If you are tall and prefer to have some more leg room, then this is definitely a great choice for you too as the three-wheeled scooter provides more leg space than any other type of scooter.

Four-Wheeled Scooters

If you prefer better weight distribution over leg space (so if you aren’t that tall but have more weight), you might prefer a four-wheeled scooter. This scooter is really effective for outdoor use as it’s sturdier and can handle rough terrain a lot better. It has a wider and more secure wheelbase, which means it is a lot better than the three-wheeled scooter at managing weight and also powering through tough ground.

Travel Scooters

Travel scooters are the most useful scooters if you are someone who travels a lot and wants to be covering long distances in a short amount of time.

Heavy Duty Scooters

These heavy-duty scooters have much larger tires than a normal scooter. They are a lot stronger and tough, and the scooter is higher up off the ground. These types of mobility scooters have the strongest bases. They can also reach much higher speeds and have a lot more range. They are definitely the best choice if you plan to use your scooter for extended periods in the outdoors.

  1. Its sad that while we age little by little we might start getting more dependent of our family members, to the point that walking alone its just a struggle and to sit back and just be living tons of memories of our past when we were young. I think this scouter can alleviate some of the issue not totally but at that point of life anything will be way better then nothing.

    • Hi Erick,

I couldn’t agree more. This is a sad reality and one that we have to accept. Like many adults, I am experiencing this with my parents, who were both very active when they were younger. I have already bought them a power lift chair, and I’m hoping they wouldn’t need a scooter anytime soon. I won’t hesitate to get them one, although I’ll advise them not to get too dependent on technology.

Thanks for visiting and hope you check out how website again.

  2. Hi Lisa,

Life must definitely go on even when we get old. And continuing to be independent really boosts the morale of seniors.

When I see old people in the mall in their scooters, I see in their faces the joy of being able to go around just like us who are still able to move without mobility aids.

Your post about these mobility scooters is thorough and very clear. You explained well the pros and cons of each scooter and which is suited for each need.

This article is a big help for those seniors or anybody with mobility issues or physical deformities.

    • Definitely, Marisa.

We must keep going even as we age. It’s sad that life becomes more difficult as we age, but this is life…we must live with this.
Fortunately for us, technology is making things easier. With scooters like these, commuting to the mall or any other location has become easier for people with mobility issues.

Thanks for visiting and hope you visit again.
